Breast Cancer Poster

Portrait version of the Poster for the 2011 Komen NYC Race for the Cure Poster Contest

I recently took part in a poster competition for the 2011 Komen NYC Race for the Cure Poster Contest. The parameters of the competition was to include the tag line “Run Breast Cancer out of Town”, use the two identifier breast cancer pink tones, and include something in the image that placed New York City as the location for the race.

After a whole lot of rough work and concepts (some including woman balanced on biplane wings shooting at a King Kong-esque monster representing Breast Cancer), I arrived at the image of Running shoes with spurs.  I decided to take the tag line and use it as a sort of jumping point for the image. I took the tag line and gave the image a “wild West” spin. The spurs are reminiscent of the headpiece on the Statue of Liberty, which represents steadfast strength, life and freedom. The fight against breast cancer puts runners in these shoes, taking the wild essence and determination of a cowboy to the streets of New York City.
